2011 Circle of Honour Philanthropy Awards
June 4th, 2011

The Huronia Community Foundation Circle of Honour Philanthropic Awards provide the opportunity to recognize individuals of all ages, businesses and organizations that have contributed financially toward the improvement of the quality of daily life in Huronia.

2011 Winners

Individual: Cathy Bayles
Cathy is a terrific role model for others.   As both the Vice-President and President of the Board of Directors and now as Chair of the Robbert Hartog Advisory Committee, Cathy has been a driving force behind the Georgian Bay General Hospital Foundation for the past nine years where she has helped raise more than $4 million for new digital imaging equipment.  Not only does Cathy give of her time, expertise and experience, she is a key supporter for events that touch our larger community. Cathy sponsors events such as the annual hospital gala, Curl with the Pros and the Circle of Honour Philanthropy Awards.
Group: Elmvale & District Lions Club
The Elmvale & District Lions Club certainly follow their motto of “We Serve”.  Members contribute both volunteer hours and financial help for the betterment of community life. The Elmvale & District Lions Club has helped by supplying medical equipment for disabled elderly, by supporting youth by sponsoring sports teams, by donating awards/scholarships, and by financially supporting children in need so they can join Scouting and local sports clubs. The club contributed funds to a local food bank to help with the rent and the purchase of a new refrigerator and shelving.  They help the hearing and visually impaired by supplying glasses and hearing devices and improve our local environment with education programs, tree planting, and participation in community clean-up projects. Currently, their main project is a five year commitment of $100,000 to Hospice Simcoe.
Business: Atlas Block
The generosity of Atlas Block is reflective of the faith and strong citizenship beliefs of senior management including Don Gordon and his daughter, Laura Vaughan. Whether through financial gifts or contributions of building materials, Atlas Block has been a consistent supporter of numerous community organizations such as the YMCA, local hockey, soccer and curling teams; Y’s Men’s Music Festival, Huronia Community Foundation, Huronia Hospitals Foundation, Wye Marsh Wildlife Centre, Shelter Now, OSPCA, Midland Flyers; and most recently, the Midland Cultural Centre. Additionally, Atlas Block has chosen to support a rural school by providing it with $5,000 per school year to use as the school sees fit. Atlas Block has made large financial contributions to most of the charitable and not-for-profit organizations in the area and as such, exhibits a spirit of unconditional giving.  Atlas Block stands as a shining example to the community.
Youth: Midland YMCA Youth Leadership Program
Currently in its 12th year, the Midland YMCA Youth Leadership Program has been responsible for significant fundraising through corporate sponsorship and organizing special events. Each youth group is responsible for creating their own “case for support”. The case is determined by identifying what the YCMA means to them and what the benefits of being involved in a leadership program are. The leadership groups are accountable for everything related to special events including brainstorming, planning, and organizing. As a whole, the program has contributed approximately 9,900 hours and approximately $164,000 to philanthropic endeavours. Funds raised have gone towards sustaining and supporting the YMCA Strong Kids Campaign, the Youth Leadership Program and the Midland Mirror Adopt a Family program. YMCA Youth Leadership instils good values and provides the necessary tools for kids to continue to foster their philanthropic undertakings.
